Using The Job Search Process
by: JobsDB Hong Kong  Digg!

An analysis of the job market should be followed up with more detailed research into individual jobs. Go through the process of applying for vacancies to help you learn much more about the type of role that might best suit you.

Analysing vacancies
Once you have looked at the job opportunities available and assessed the suitability of different business sectors, target individual vacancies in order to find out more. If you find a vacancy that really appeals to you, dissect the advertisement and any information that the employer sends you. Find out as much as possible about the organisation and its products and services. List the key points of the role to establish what the employer is looking for. By going through this selection process you will discover whether you are keen on the job, or perhaps even form a very different impression of the vacancy.

Do's

  • Do apply for vacancies that will stretch you beyond your present level.
  • Do maintain a positive attitude, concentrating on your strengths.
  • Do ask for feedback; it can help you learn from a disappointment.

Don'ts

  • Don't build up your hopes too high over any particular job.
  • Don't hold back at an interview if you are enthusiastic.
  • Don't get despondent if and when you experience rejection.

Assessing suitability
Job applications may take time, effort, and a substantial investment of self-confidence, but it is always worth applying for jobs you think would really suit you. Start by matching the details of the vacancy to yourself. Do you have the relevant experience, attributes, and personality to claim this job for your own? You may decide not to continue with the application once you have considered all the information, or you may be able to improve your suitability by stressing your transferable skills. For example, if you have not managed large teams before, you could emphasize your leadership role in complex projects and your varied responsibilities.

Forming your opinion
If you are invited to an interview, use this chance to learn more about the job and broaden your research into finding the role that is right for you. Attending the interview will enable you to look at the environment, meet people with whom you will be working, hear more about the job concerned, and seek answers to any outstanding issues. You can then make a final judgment. If you are offered the job and you like what you saw, you can accept with confidence. If you decide not to go further with the application, view the experience as good practice. If you are not offered the position, use the process to improve future endeavours.

Key Points

  1. Rehearse your presentation before you have an interview.
  2. Show keenness in an interview, even you are not yet sure about the job.
  3. Keep records of all your applications and interview.
  4. Tell a company if you decide not to take the application process further.
